Hi Mike and All,

It is nice to be back from my last adventure and it is good to be back to where it is warm and a nice bed. Mike, thanks for the article and webpage. I am always interested in the different ways of training. I have studied this manual in the past and have enjoyed it alot. Many of the concepts of this type of military training does not fit in the type of training we teach to the military and other law enforcement and civilian programs. I am always amazed at what is considered as effective. I can never understand why someone would attacked someone"s arm if they have been grabbed as they are attacking the strongest part of and attackers body. I have always enjoyed the differnet concepts, but when it comes to life and death, the simple reality is that many of the techniques that are taught do not deal with the reality of power size and muliple attackers. In the higher levels of SSS training we never focus on joint minipulation, or striking boney structure, or grab, punch or strike with a fist or closed hand. The possibility of throwing some one to the ground is extremely limited, and if he out weighs you by thirty pounds with the intent of killing you and you have your gear on, you are in a world of hurt. I know, Iknow, many that i have trained tell me that there instructor is very effective and dangerous, I hear it all the time. but the simple truth and for those that have faced violence know that joints don"t break, it is extremely hard to punch and strike cleanly with effectivenss. The reality is that it will only be effective on an attacker that is smaller than you, and even then if you are successful, you are not dealing with the real threat, and another unseen attacker that is about to slice you throat or put a bullet in you. It is the same as those that use a blade for survival, in SSS our staff is trained to never stab as it stops the movement of the blade. The reallity between life and death can be marked within a tenth of a second, that is why we never focus on the attacker, we train with the focus on the possiblities if those we do not see and will kill us and we use any weapon at hand and that we only focus on soft tissue, mianly the neck area, and we are always moving, never stopping in the mindset of escaping or doing as much damage to multipe numbers as quickly as possible. In training the military and other high level agencies there is a very little on the dvd series that focus on this type of level. The only way to experince it is to train with the staff hands on. Thanks again and be safe, Your friend, Larry

Larry very interesting. The real world is differnt than the dojo. That manual is WWII and old, not like SSS.

I have Boxing books from the 1920's and old books on Judo, JuJitsu. The old stuff interests me from an acedemic point of view. Some of the very old methods work well, thinking of Sicilian Knife fighting and other old arts.
